About the Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, honors Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet from ancient China. Two traditions stand out: dragon boat racing – teams paddling ornate boats to drumbeats, reenacting the search for his body; and zongzi – sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, originally thrown into the river to protect his remains. The festival also marks the summer transition, with customs like hanging mugwort to ward off illness.
